Planning and preparation are necessary when traveling with family pets. The very first rule of traveling with your pet is to have your pet wear a secure collar at all times with current ID tags and/or
a microchip. The tags will be proof of rabies vaccination along with your name, address and phone number in case your pet becomes separated. Bring a recent photograph and written description of your
pet including call name, breed, sex, age, any microchip or tattoo numbers, and a description of coat, color and markings including any unusual markings, scars, or other identifying marks, as well as
weight and height. These will be invaluable if your pet does become separated.
Grooming (bathing, combing, trimming nails) before a trip, plus having its favorite food, toys and dishes available will make your pet more comfortable. Have proof of rabies vaccination and a current
health certificate with you when crossing state or international borders. Lastly, DON'T leave animals in the car in hot climates or during the warmer months, as even a short time in a hot vehicle can
cause serious injury such as heatstroke to your beloved pet.
